No matter what type of garage door opener you have, all of them work following the same basic principal. An internal unit houses a motor that is connected to a trolley, and when activated, this system allows the door to open and close.
There are five basic types of garage door openers, or systems, that enable the opening and closing of doors through the transmission of signals from the remote to the internal mechanism. However, each style has small variances that can change the level of noise or benefits.
Chain drives are operated by a metal chain that connects the trolley to the motor. Because of the metal-to-metal contact, this is a fairly noisy but cost-effective option. Often, this style is mostly recommended for detached garages, since it won’t be as disruptive inside the home.
Belt driven openers are much smoother and less noisy than the chain option since the metal is swapped out for rubber belt. It also has less parts, which makes it easier to care for and maintain. This style is recommended when the garage shares a wall or ceiling with a lived-in space, such as a bedroom or family room.
Screw drive systems have the trolley follow a threaded steel rod that rotates as it lifts and lowers the doors. One of the benefits of this style is that can handle heavier doors and requires less maintenance. It also is considered one of the faster options for opening and closing. While this system is quieter than chain drives, it is louder than belt driven openers.
Jackshaft drive openers are located on the side of the door, which allows families to build and utilize overhead storage options. With these openers, the 24v DC motor drives pulleys and cables to turn a torsion bar or spring in order to lift and lower the door. This is often a more expensive option to consider.
Direct drive openers are the quietest units of all because it only has one moving part – the motor – compared to other options. In this driver, the motor travels along the stationary chain that is embedded in an overhead steel rail. This option is ideal for those who work in their garage, or close-by to it.
The best thing you can do to ensure your garage door is free of problems, is to have an annual inspection. Whether you hire a service professional, or take it upon yourself – regularly inspecting the complete system is essential to spotting small problems before they become big ones that are also dangerous for your health and safety.
As you can tell, each system essentially works the same, which is why people also must focus on the motor as part of the package. Horsepower is the main driving force behind the function of your garage door. Depending on the size and weight of your door, you will need to select the appropriate horsepower, which can range between 1/3 and 1.5 HP. A typical, single-car garage may only need the smallest HP available, whereas, a larger one with high-tech features and frequent use may require the highest.
Finally, after you choose the right opening unit for you – you should still perform periodic maintenance to ensure safe and proper function. Inspecting the springs, cables and other hardware components is a great place to start and applying lubricant can help things moving smoothly. If you notice a change in noise or speed, it may mean it’s time for a closer look.
